Traditionally, the three days prior to Lent were known as Shrovetide, a time when priests would hear confessions, determine penance, and grant absolution. Once the communicants were properly “shriven,” entire villages would spend Tuesday in feasting and celebrating. Since Lent was a time of abstinence –from meat, fat, eggs and dairy products—the menu for Shrove Tuesday was designed to use up all the fatty foods in the kitchen. In England, pancakes became the specialty of the day. To commemorate this ancient celebration, we invite you to a family pancake supper on the evening of Tuesday, February 16th. In keeping with the tradition, we’ll have lots of pancakes, butter, maple syrup, sausage, and a beverage. We promise good food and good fellowship for all….Bring your friends! |
